Selecting The Best Fantasy Series

By Jocelyn Davidson

The fantasy genre has really come into its own in recent years, particularly with many movies being made from the books that have become box office hits. Fantasy worlds, magic, epic adventure and entertaining characters abound. To find the best fantasy series, some online research may be helpful. Reading about what others have enjoyed and looking at lists of those which are most widely read can help with selection.

Dragons, warriors, elves and wizards are just some of the characters that can be expected in such novels. These characters often find themselves involved in a struggle of good against evil. They persevere despite great odds and are victorious in the end.

In some of these books, however, the characters are more complex and the lines between good and evil are not so clear cut. Characters may be portrayed as quite diabolical initially and gradually layers are peeled away to give the reader glimpses of what has made them the way they are. On the other hand, they may appear good with their deep flaws slowly being revealed.

Readers of series love the idea that the world they have been immersed in does not just abruptly end when the last page of the first novel has been turned. They can continue reading about the exploits of the same characters and with each book, there is further development of these characters and the settings. The fictional worlds created by these authors are so intricately detailed that it is hard to believe they do not really exist.

Many people have speculated about why this genre has become so popular. Some say it is because these books allow us to see the deepest truths about humanity due to the fact that they are shrouded in a fictional world. They also say that they offer us a vehicle through which we can subconsciously work through our fears, particularly in our society which is progressing so fast technologically.

It is true that the pace of technological growth is intimidating. It is no wonder that we often long for some good old-fashioned magic where the inexplicable and marvelous happen all the time. These fantastical tales also often reveal a quest for self knowledge, a growth of courage and wisdom in the characters. They are also just extremely good entertainment, allowing us to escape from humdrum reality for a while.

Tolkien is one of the godfathers of this genre and he has provided inspiration for many other authors who have followed in his footsteps. C. S. Lewis too, provided us with some unforgettable novels about the world of Narnia. Both of these authors have had their novels made into movies. Some people see the movies first and then want to go back and read the novels. Others have delighted in the novels long before seeing the movies.

Readers who are fans of this genre will often share in online forums about the series they love the most and await a new novel with eager anticipation. These novels are available today from a wide variety of online stores. Readers who love a certain author are easily able to find all the other novels he or she has written.
