Information About When The Grid Goes Down

By Cynthia Wilson

The grid is susceptible to errors. It can go down anytime. Disasters can also bring it down. Surviving when the grid goes down requires a good deal of preparation. One needs to plan for this undesirable eventuality. Failure to plan will lead to consequences. It might mean a family enduring cold winter nights because of lack of electricity. One should never put too much faith in something made by human hands. The grid system is a work of men. Thus, there is nothing like a hundred percent guarantee.

The supply of electricity reaches millions of homes and businesses from the transmission centers through the grid. This infrastructure also supplies natural gas. In addition, the movement of water from the pumping stations to the faucets happens through this system. Thus, it is a piece of infrastructure that serves vital roles. Its failure portends doom necessitating the need to prepare.

Failure has occurred in the past. This is the main justification for stipulating future failure. What happened in the past can happen in the future especially if the hard lessons were not learned. Human beings are prone to repeating the same mistakes over and over. Some electric transmission lines are old and worn out. They need urgent repairs. The funding towards this infrastructure is insufficient.

In most cases of power failure, the forces of nature are to blame. Hurricanes usually bring down series of power lines. The destructive nature of strong winds is well documented. Natural phenomena is beyond the scope of humans. The much that men can do is to put in place sufficient emergency preparedness measures. This will facilitate survival during bleak times.

Hacking is an imminent and persistent threat. It is not only affecting banks and corporate institutions. National intelligences have been stolen through hacking. This criminal activity can also cause the destruction of the grid. The computerization of everything puts crucial infrastructure at high risk. Citizens need to be aware of these unpreventable threats and carry out the necessary emergency preparedness measures.

The most important survival measure is to have sufficient backup heating and lighting. This can be powered by propane or kerosene. With a good heater, a house will be heated for many days after a blackout. It is advisable to find the best products in the markets. One should read reviews and obtain useful recommendations before purchasing any survival item.

Prolonged power failure will also lead to a food crisis because of destroyed food production and the inability to transport the available foods. Therefore, one should always stock enough dry foods. There is need to have a plan of how one will provide for his family during a disaster. Emergency food supply will come in handy. One should not tell other people about his supplies.

The unexpected at times happen. Life is not always predictable. Blackouts usually happen without any warning. Grid failure is more serious than a simple blackout. It will greatly paralyze a nation and affect the daily conduct of life. The ensuing disaster will require survival skills. Those who will manage to survive are those individuals who will have the right supplies.
