What To Expect From A Tucson Speech Therapist

By Eloise Hewitt

There are a lot of people who have trouble talking, and this could be a multitude of reasons. A Tucson speech therapist can help in various ways by giving the patient exercises to do. This could be on a temporary basis where someone has a brain tumor and needs help getting certain sounds back. There are also times where one needs this for greater lengths of time.

Often this is for children, but this a preconceived idea, and many adults need help with stutters and slurs after they go through with a brain operation. After a head injury the brain is affected and when the temporal lobe is damaged one finds that this is the part of the brain that deals with the speech so one will need a therapist to help with this.

They will give you exercises to do, and if you get into a routine and are disciplined and motivated, then you will start to see an improvement. Sometimes there is a break and the speech will not flow. Other times there is a lisp. This can happen when the tongue is too big for the mouth. Some parents just leave this, but this is not recommended.

You may have to live with this forever, but with the help of a therapist, this can be rectified. There are exercises and homework that one must do. Parents must make sure that their children get into a routine with this because the more disciplined they are, the more improvements they are going to see.

With a lisp, parents often think that this is something they will brush over and the child will grow into their tongue. However, one must remember that you need to tell the child how to learn to speak in the meantime. There are adults that still speak with a lisp, and one should have dealt with this at a young age. It is possible that one can have problems in life, such as bullying and this is something that is growing all the time.

Sometimes there are various speech defects that can happen from a head injury or from a brain tumor. This may take a while for the patient to recover, depending on the severity. One has to be patient and the family also has to learn not to interfere while the therapist is busy in the sessions. One has to realize that therapy is a slow process. You have to take it in slow stages.

There are certain things that you can pick up, but at the same time it is important that you are not neurotic and pedantic. Kids do develop at different rates and this is something that is important to take into consideration. However, there are big factors that are more noticeable and even children will see this.

You may find that speech defects will be picked up when a child has another condition, and so this will be easier to notice. Teachers are well trained to notice these things as well. You probably won't see this when kids are very small, so teachers will be able to assist with this. It is important that they do because if this is brushed aside and kids grow up with a stutter, for example they may be bullied.
