What Should Be Contained In Anti Hero Novels

By Frances Olson

Gone are the days when movies and novels had heroes and villains. Writers have brought into the light a character known as an anti-hero. These are a character that covers both the hero and the villain characters. These are a character who you hate to love and love to hate. The charisma is gritty, dark and moody. The novel points out what readers expect to read in anti hero novels.

First off, an anti-hero needs to be deep-rooted. This means they are equally good and bad. So you should not lean to making them appear as more of a villain or a hero would be dynamic in order to cover both sides. The character is supposed to have feelings too of doing both good and evil in order to achieve the anti-hero aspect.

Unlike a hero or villain, an anti-hero is human. A villain is a pure evil while a hero is all good. An anti-hero, however, is more relatable to the readers as they have the characteristics of a flawed human being. They are able to be angry, cowardly, greedy, charitable, noble among many other traits. As a person reads, they will be able to put themselves in such situations.

All characters have a certain weakness. It is quite text book for the weakness to be someone the personality is attracted to. The vulnerability should be something other than that. The character should always work their best to keep the secret of their vulnerability to themselves. A counter action should also be put in place in case the weakness of the charisma is exposed.

The character should be selfish and disregarding. This means that their actions should be driven in the hopes of achieving their own selfish goals. Therefore, as they act, they do not care whether their actions affect others positively or negatively. In the event that the outcome is positive, well and good as it was not with the intent of the character.

In order to create the villain side of your anti-hero, they should have a back story. A past that drives them to act out. Everyone has something that sets them off but how the character reacts should be a bit out of the ordinary. This scars ought to be the main reason why the charisma is out to seek revenge or even solve a mystery.

The character is of course not all good. This means that as they act, they do not care if they are going to any regulations or people are getting hurt because of how they act. Although they do not respect the law, it does not mean that they are completely ruthless. They should have their own code and principals that guide them not to get completely out of hand.

The perfect anti-hero must be able to bring out different reactions in the reader. One that is always supported by the reader is alright but is not always great. An anti-hero should always have a gritty character. As much as they do evil, they are also good half of the time.
