Discovering The Essence Of A True Crime Novel

By Jose Barnes

When it comes to writing, there are a number of different genres. Most often, the first of these to come to mind are fiction, non-fiction, poetry and prose. While this is the case, there are also others such as that of the True Crime Novel. In most cases, this type story is focused on a story which readers will find particularly interesting, especially when there has been a massive amount of coverage in the media.

For the most part, the genre is one in which an author examines a specific incident in detail. While most use actual names of those involved, some authors may also create original characters based on victims. Some of the most popular books in this area are written about murder and serial killers.

While it can often be hard to relay the essence of a story to readers, authors working in this area tend to do a great job. For, as the stories are about real people, readers can often connect with the victims. Although, those whom write these stories from a speculative point of view as an onlooker may have a more difficult time doing so.

In all cases, it is important to research and understand the facts before writing or publishing a book related to the event. There are other authors whom write about crimes which were either historic in nature or created a precedent. For example, books related to assassinations of presidents and other individuals. Whether these individuals are known as authors or historians, it is even more important that details of which these individuals write be true and accurate.

Most often writers take information from a number of different sources when penning a story of this nature. A good example of this style writing is that of the book Helter Skelter, published in 1974. In this case, the story refers to the Manson Family murders which were carried out by various members at the request of Charles Manson. The book is so enthralling to readers that it still holds the record for being the all time best seller of books of this nature in the United States.

The most exciting books of this nature are often considered those which detail first hand accounts of a crime. In addition, when a court case has ensured and a sentence has been handed down, it is important that those details be included in as interesting a way as possible. For, when readers can put oneself in the court along with the perpetrator and victim, the story becomes even more interesting to the reader.

As might be expected, sensational crimes make the best stories when it comes to this genre. For example, JonBenet Ramsey, O. J. Simpson and others provide authors the chance to write in-depth publications related to the crimes. While these crimes may be more notable, there are also local stories which have made it to bookshelves. For example, the story of Natalie Antonetti, a woman whom was brutally murdered in Austin, Texas in the 1980s is the subject of a book titled "As She Lay Sleeping."

Whether major or minor crimes, many make it onto local and national bookshelves. Depending on the essence of the story, the book may either be placed into fiction or non-fiction categories. Generally, if a story is based on an actual crime and written in first person, it is placed in the non-fiction category. Whereas, if the story has been changed to protect the innocent or for other reasons, it is often considered to be a fictional work based on a true story.
