Characteristics Of African American Christian Fiction Novels

By Richard Barnes

Writers of these books should know specifically what to write in their stories. These are very different from other works of writings as they should distinctively show what it is like to be a believer. Therefore, the content to put in this book require a lot of analysis to ensure what written is what is supposed to appear. The following determines African American Christian fiction novel.

They base the romance on more than physical attraction. If at all the book contain any romance, the author should base it on more than just the physical attraction between the involved parties. They try to show other inward qualities that made the two people fall in love. Many show romance between a believer and a non-believer which is wrong. The Bible points out clearly that the relationship between believers and non-believers is as wide as the heaven and earth. Therefore this romance is discouraged in such books. Romance is based mainly on Godly behaviors.

They do not encourage violence and revenge. Stories on these kinds of books are purely not based on revenge and violence. These two are ungodly and hence discouraged. The Bible encourages people to love their enemies and not tolerate their actions. The two actions do not show love because they inflict pain to the enemy.

Do not glamorize sexual sin. Usage of sexual sin scenes is discouraged from being used in these kinds of books. Sexual sin is against the Bible and not Christ-like. Many authors nowadays have portrayed the use of sexual sin in every writing they make. However much of teachings they try to bring out in it, the fact remains that that sin is emphasized in the book or is praised so much. Although sometimes, many use it and in case you do ensure that you point out how much it is a sin and the consequences one suffers because of it.

Lack profanity. What people talk is what they possess, what writers write in their books determines who they are. The words they use in writing are words they use in talking. A mango tree cannot bear cherry the same way believers cannot bring forth the actions of a non-believer. This, therefore, means that a person who is writing these books should shun away from using bad language and an abusive word which encourages immorality.

Actors who are believers act in integrity or suffer the consequences. Many authors fail to show the consequences of actors who fail to follow integrity. They show them as winners. They are portrayed as honest people who compromise their personalities. After this compromise, they are maybe forgiven, but the action is not reversible which is wrong. They should show believers being rewarded by maintaining their faith and not else.

The availability of Christian message. The novel should have a message that is based on the values of believers. The reader at the end of the story is to choose the actor who remained in the good actions and got rewarded. This a quality of all such fictions.

It has a Biblical basis. These novels are supposed to have their basis from the Bible. Everything the author portrays should point back to the biblical teachings. This shows that the author knows well the kind of book they are writing and does not end up misleading the readers.
