By Andrew McDonald

Dyslexia is a term that describes a range of learning disabilities that mainly affect reading, writing and speaking. It is condition that is estimated to affect five to ten in every one hundred Americans. A majority of diagnoses are made in childhood with a few being noted for the first time in adulthood. If looking treatment for dyslexia Carlsbad residents should know understand a number of things on the condition.

Because the problems tend to present quite early, parents, guardians and even teachers are often the first groups of people to notice. Due to the overlap of the condition with other developmental problems, it is wise to have a professional evaluation and get a definitive diagnosis. This is usually carried out by a child psychologist or psychiatrist. Among the things that need to be established are the family history of the child, how well they can understand written content, their fluency in speech, level of vocabulary and intelligence among others.

Since the condition is usually associated with a structural problem of the brain, correcting it is virtually impossible. It is considered a lifelong condition among those affected. However, there are a number of things that can be done to improve the quality of life of the affected individual. Early diagnosis, is important if any of these interventions are to make a difference.

A child suffering from dyslexia should be enrolled in a special program that allows them to learn at a slower pace than their peers. They should be facilitated to use all their senses so as to make it easier for them. For instance, they may have recorded lessons that allow them to used their sense of hearing or may be given models of letters and numbers that help them use their sense of touch. All these make it easier for their brains to process information.

A social support structure is important for any child that has been diagnosed with dyslexia. It is not uncommon for these children to be subjected to bullying by their peers due to their learning disabilities. As such, their family is the one unit where encouragement should come from. It is important to make it clear that their challenge is not a fault of their own. This will help improve their self esteem and help them cope better.

Other than providing a shoulder to lean on, parents need to also play an active role in the learning process. Reading to a dyslexic child on a regular basis trains their brain to optimize the auditory sense and this will make it a lot easier for them. The child should also be provided with audio books that they can listen to form time to time. Having family reading time that involves everyone reading together is even a better strategy.

When people live with dyslexia well into their adulthood they acquire various coping mechanisms. Many find easier ways of reading. Some of the issues that may need to be handled at this point are loss of memory and low self esteem which may affect productivity in the work place.

Dyslexia results in a variable presentation among affected persons. Some have milder forms of the problem while others have more serious forms. The important thing to remember is that the condition does not affect the level of intelligence of the individual. Many of the people with the problem are as intelligent as their peers.
