On Best Seller Lists We Find Books By Celebrity Childrens Book Authors

By Sally Delacruz

Jamie Lee Curtis, daughter of the late Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, is a best selling author of childrens books. Children love My Mommy Hung The Moon and Is There really a Human Race. She is on a long list of celebrity childrens book authors who have written more than one juvenile best selling tome.

Stepping out of her role in the horror genre is Julianne Moore with Freckleface Strawberry. Kristi Yamaguchi skates off the ice and into new territory with Dream Big, Little Pig. Parents and kids alike will greatly enjoy Steve Martins rhyming tome, Late For School.

Katie Couric, news announcer and television host, wrote about soccer games and named the characters after her daughters. Julie Andrews seems to be the appropriate actress to write about fairy princesses. When Jim Carreys story of How Roland Rolls came out, it immediately had children and parents alike rolling on the floor in laughter.

A wide array of Christmas books are available for kids, both religious and secular. But how about that other holiday, Halloween. Jerry Seinfeld covers that one in a book of the same name. Little goblins and bags of candy abound. Various topics are aptly covered by singers Sting, Gloria Estefan and Jewel.

Jay Leno has turned into a dynamic writer of childrens books. Adults all know he is funny and now kids do too. Joy Behar, the hilarious stand-up comic and host of The View joined the list with Sheetzucacapoopoo My Kind Of Dog. It is a lesson in pronunciation for the kids along with being fun.

Most of these celebrities gather ideas and material for their books from their own children. In the role of parent there is much comedic content. Pets take a close second place as sources.

Kids love stories that rhyme. Dr. Seuss still heads the list of famous silly poem writers. Now Steve Martin joins the fray. Kids ask for his book to be read over and over. They never tire of it.

Each author, however, would be bereft if words were the only content that appealed to the kids. Illustrators fill the pages with beauty, hilarity and solemn accompaniment to their thought-provoking words. Kids love them.

Whoopie Goldberg, Jeff Foxworthy and other comedians, big television and movie stars, have fertile minds for childrens books. It is easy to understand their creativity. It is not as easy to understand when they find time to write books.

Everyone loves comedian Dr. Bill Cosby. He seems a natural to write books for children with his doctorate in education. When Jimmy Carter was President of our country, his daughter Amy grew up in the White House. She too, has written a book for kids.

Another author who resided in the White House is Jenna Bush. Her father George W. Bush was President. Her creation is Read All About It. From the United Kingdom, Tea For Ruby, was written by the Duchess of York. Queen Latifa has also contributed her writing talent.

However, probably the most auspicious author on the list is current President Barack Obama. He wrote a beautiful tear jerker, Of Thee I Sing. He brings to the attention of his daughters, tributes to thirteen notables from the annals of history. Again, we wonder, when did he or any of these famous authors find the time.
