Characteristics Of A Good Christian Novelist

By Ines Brennan

If you have been to the bookstore, then you know that there are a lot of novels out there. These books are categorized according to genres and each was written by a different author. An aspiring writer will need a number of qualities to become top in his field. The following are some of the characteristics a Christian novelist should have.

An aspiring writer will have to be very proficient in the language he will write in. Technical aspects like grammar have to be considered. One will also have to be good at the language so that you can convey your message effectively. The right words will be needed to describe the situation or express emotions.

One will have to be imaginative if one wants to produce a novel. There are many topics to choose from but if you really want to stand out, you will have to produce something original. With the huge number of books that have been written before, you will need to be creative to generate fresh material for your readers.

To further enhance your skills, one must also read other materials. Reading familiarizes you with different approaches and styles. This is also a chance to learn what other authors are doing. This way you can learn more about what keeps the reader interested. Moreover, this is a chance to create something entirely different from what these authors have produced.

A good writer must be good at research. In order to lend authenticity to the story, a writer will typically have to research the subject he has chosen for his book. If one has a story involving genetics, then one may have to at least learn the basics of this topic. This will make the story more believable.

He must also have a good understanding of his target audience. One needs to understand what the readers are like so that one can anticipate their reactions. When you understand your readers, you know what would appeal to them and what would not. You can create a story that will interest them and make them react.

A good author is not lazy. Writing is craft that will require constant practice and persistence especially during bad days. Sometimes, the writer will be inspired while during other times, he may not have anything to write about. He must persist and continue to hone his skills. He must make use of his available time.

Though you still have not published anything, you must act professional. This will mean writing constantly to create new material and revise it as needed. You will have to be conscientious about deadlines and make sure that everything is submitted on time. It would also be in your interest to learn all there is about publishing.

Just because one can write does not mean that one has what it takes to become a recognized Christian novelist. There is a lot of work, research and practice that are involved when one wants to become a professional. An author will have to understand his audience and have mastery over the language. One must foster creativity and be persistent in writing new material.
