Knowing All About Domestic Abuse

By Jayne Rutledge

Domestic abuse or spousal violence is the act of one partner forcefully trying to subdue or dominate the other partner by means of fear. Now the dominating party may use of violence, threats, blackmail, or any other means in order to control the subdued partner. Of course if this type of act is to be stopped, it is always important to understand and recognize it first.

The thing about spousal violence is that it may happen to anyone regardless of age, sex, and race. Many people believe that it is only the men who would do this to their wives but what many do not know is that women are also known to do these shameless acts to their husbands but in a different form. This means that abusive behavior sees no discrimination at all.

One thing to take note of is that one does not become an abusive person just right after one day. In fact, the abusive behavior would usually come out just a few years or even months after marriage in small forms of insults or belittling comments. Of course if this may actually further escalate to more hurtful words that may actually humiliate the spouse.

Now from these small little hurtful words, forms of violence like physical violence may spring out. From little slaps to the faces or arms, more violent hits may actually come up. If the dominating spouse is not told off, then he or she may actually go as far as hitting the subdued one or even resort to scratching.

Now abusive behavior is not just limited to hitting the subdued partner or saying hurtful and belittling words. In fact, there is such a thing known as sexual abuse that may also happen between spouses. Forced sex is usually done by the men and is done in a manner that would hurt the subdued partner which may also be considered as rape.

Of course the signs of being a victim of this kind of behavior is actually quite obvious. If one acts very timid and seemingly scared in front of his or her spouse, then it is actually obvious that something is going in their house. Usually, victims would be on their toes and watching out for their actions as they are scared of offending their spouses.

One of the main causes of this kind of behavior would actually be insecurity. Because the dominating partner does not feel like he actually amounts to anything, then he would rather just hurt his spouse in order to push himself up. In a way, that would actually serve as an ego booster for his insecurity as the dominating partner will finally feel like he or she is in control of something.

Now the reason why domestic abuse is very dangerous to anyone is simply because it can cause long term effects emotionally. It can make a person lose confidence in himself or herself and may actually affect their personality in general. It is for this main reason that this sort of activity has to stop because no one deserves such treatment.
